Baba Budangiri is a 1,895 m spine of the Western Ghats in Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka — a grassy and shola-forested ridge above the coffee country, where the Dattatreya Peetha (Datta Giri) caves sit near the summit and Sufi lore shares the hill with India's first coffee.

History & culture

In the 17th century the Sufi saint Baba Budan carried coffee seeds back from Arabia and planted them on this ridge — the reputed origin of Indian coffee. Above the shrines, the Dattatreya Peetha caves have drawn Hindu holy men for centuries, making the hill a rare, peaceful meeting-ground of Hindu and Sufi worship.
