Ayodhya lies on the right bank of the Sarayu river in Uttar Pradesh's Awadh plains, 134 km from Lucknow — the sacred old city of the Raghu dynasty, its ghats and temple streets fronting the holy river across a flat, green field of peepal and lotus-ponds.

The capital of Rama's forefathers and of the epic itself, Ayodhya has carried a millennium of temple ruins and a century of contested history.
