Geography & terrain

Avalanche Lake lies in the emerald hills of the Nilgiris near Ooty, Tamil Nadu — a still, dark-green lake at the head of the Avalanche valley, surrounded by dense shola forest and the grassy downs of the plateau's highest meadows. The road loops past the Emerald lake gates onto the upper slopes.

History & culture

The valley was shikar-and-tea country of the British Nilgiris; its name comes from the 19th-century story of the hill-slide that shaped the hollow. Today the lake and its surrounding sholas are a protected reserve-fringe of the Nilgiris' upper country.
