Aru is the meadow valley 12 km beyond Pahalgam in Kashmir's Lidder country — a green bowl of pine and birch at the river's head, where the Lidder's streams gather below the great Kolahoi peaks.

History & culture

The valley was the shepherds' summer ground and the camping country of the old Kashmir courts — its meadows and shepherd settlements older than the modern tourist era; today Aru is the region's classic trek base, the starting ground of the Kolahoi and Lidderwat routes that the valley's walking history has built.
