Arikamedu lies on the Ariyankuppam river's bank, 4 km south of Puducherry's town centre — the excavated remains of an ancient port whose bricks, bead-working floors and trade-ware mounds stretch across the village fields.

History & culture

Arikamedu was the great Indo-Roman port of the ancient Tamil coast — its excavation by Mortimer Wheeler in 1945 revealed the Roman amphora, Arretine ware and the local bead industry that traded with the Mediterranean for centuries; the site's 2,000-year-old story of the sewn ships and the muslin-and-pearl trade still reads in the museum's collections.
