Geography & terrain

Anini sits at 1,600 m in the Dibang Valley district — one of India's most remote district headquarters, a tidy high-valley town above the Dibang river, 170 km of mountain road beyond Roing, ringed by snow ridges that close the valley in winter.

History & culture

The Idu Mishmi people's homeland surrounds the town, which grew as the valley's administrative and riverside settlement; its history is hunter-warrior-tribal — the Idu's salt-and-jewellery culture and the valley's remoteness kept Anini a barely-measured outpost until roads and hydel projects began arriving in this century.
