Anegundi lies on the Tungabhadra's northern bank opposite Hampi, in Koppal district of Karnataka — the older settlement of the Hampi country, its boulder-ringed lanes, ancient temples and legends spread beneath the hills that Ramayana tradition knows as Kishkindha.

History & culture

Tradition calls Anegundi the Kishkindha of the Ramayana — the monkey-kingdom of the epic, with the legends of Vali and Sugriva attached to its hills; historically it preceded Vijayanagara as the seat of the region's rulers — the name from the 'elephant-pit' of the fort — and its Navabrindavana, the Ranganatha temple and the Durga temple carry the pre-Hampi and later sainthood memories of the country.
