Geography & terrain

Alwar hugs the base of the Aravalli Baba-Ber escarpment in north-east Rajasthan, with the walled town spilling from the Bala Quila fort's hill and the Siliserh lake countryside opening toward Sariska's folds. It is the greenest of the Rajput forts-towns, red-stone, lake-washed and forest-rimmed.

History & culture

The city was carved as the capital of the Alwar (Matsya) state in the 18th century — the prize of the Kachhwaha offshoot princes; its Ancient Alwar fort, Bala Quila, has far older layers. The city palace and museum hold one of Rajputana's richest manuscript-and-palace collections, and the lakes and the Alwar school of painting (a blend of the Rajput courts) kept the town's golden thread through the 19th century.
