Geography & terrain

Almora is the horse-shoe ridge town of Kumaon, Uttarakhand, at 1,650 m, strung along a crest between two carved valleys with the snow-line of Nanda Devi and the Trishul range standing beyond. Its lanes fall steeply into oak, rhododendron and pine slopes — a medieval bazar town on a natural terrace.

History & culture

Almora was the capital of the Chand dynasty of Kumaon (1568–1791), then the British hill headquarters, and it kept its role as Kumaon's cultural heart — the Kasar Devi ridge above it became famous in the 1960s as the Himalayan hangout of artists and explorers (including a certain cosmic-era crowd), and remains a creative stronghold on the ridge's bohemian lane.
