Geography & terrain

Alleppey (Alappuzha) lies on the long ribbon of backwater between the Arabian Sea and Vembanad Lake — Kerala's largest lake, and India's longest — in the state's palm-marsh coast, south of Kochi. The town's canals thread between houseboat yards, paddy islands and church steeples of the water-logged plain.

History & culture

A trading canal-port built by the British-era rajas and the famed 'Venice of the East', Alleppey grew on Coir and the waterways that made Kerala's spice-and-copra export route. The Nehru Trophy snake-boat race (August, at Punnamada) keeps the glorious boat-race lineage of the lagoons alive, and the kettuvallam houseboat is the modern avatar of the old cargo boat.
