Ahmednagar (now Ahilyanagar) sits on the dry Deccan plateau beside the Sina river, about 121 km north-east of Pune on the old Pune–Manmad trunk line — a flat, hot-savanna town ringed by sugarcane fields and, in the dry months, dust. Its landmarks are theatrical: the hexagonal fortress with a moat in the city's east, the three-storey Salabat Khan tomb crowning a 939-m hill 13 km away, and the Kalsubai–Harishchandragad ranges rising 120–160 km north-west where the plateau meets the Sahyadri escarpment.

History & culture

Founded in 1490 by Ahmad Nizam Shah I as the capital of the Nizam Shahi sultanate, Ahmednagar's hexagonal fort was built around 1559–1562 as the state's principal stronghold. In 1595–1600 the regent queen Chand Bibi defended it against Akbar's Mughals before her death and the Mughal capture of August 1600. The Marathas and then the British (1803, Second Anglo-Maratha War) took control — the fort was never taken by assault. In 1942 the British turned it into a high-security prison for the Quit India leadership: Nehru, Patel and Azad were held in the Leaders' Block, where Nehru wrote The Discovery of India. In July 2023 the state renamed the city and district Ahilyanagar after the 18th-century queen Ahilyabai Holkar.

Fly: Pune International (PNQ) is the practical gateway — ~112 km / 1 hr 40 min, taxi ₹3,300–4,000, or MSRTC/private bus via Pune (₹200–350). Shirdi Airport (SAG) has limited flights and sits ~85 km from the city; Aurangabad (IXU) is ~115 km the other way. There is no commercial airport at Ahmednagar yet.
Train: Ahmednagar Junction (ANG) on the Pune–Manmad line sees ~10 trains a day each way to/from Pune — Maharashtra Express (11040), Azad Hind (12130), Jhelum (11078) and the Goa Express (12780) among them; sleeper from ₹150, 3A from ₹520, 3–4.5 hrs. Which is the real Chand Bibi Palace?

Neither — the hilltop three-storey tomb 13 km from town that everyone calls 'Chand Bibi Palace' is actually the tomb of Salabat Khan II, minister of Nizam Shah Murtaza IV (1579). Chand Bibi was the warrior-regent who defended the fort against the Mughals in 1595–1600. Visit the tomb for the views, and read her story at the fort.
