Geography & terrain

Ahmedabad straddles the Sabarmati river on Gujarat's central plain, founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmad Shah I on its east bank. The walled city — Bhadra Fort at its core, surrounded by 600+ pols (neighbourhood clusters of lanes, chowks and bird feeders) — sits east of the river, while the planned colonial and modern city grew on the west bank. Adalaj lies 18 km north, the state capital Gandhinagar 25 km further, and the Kutch peninsula stretches west beyond the Little Rann. History & culture

Founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmad Shah I as a new capital on the Sabarmati, Ahmedabad grew rich on Mughal-era trade and cotton. British-era mills made it the 'Manchester of the East' (the city's spinning-jenny streetscape survives in the mill precincts), while Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram (1917–1930) staged the Dandi March of 1930 from its gates. Train: Ahmedabad Junction (ADI) sits in the heart of the old city. The Vande Bharat Express from Mumbai Central (~5.5–6 hrs; CC ≈ ₹1,400, EC ≈ ₹2,900) is the fastest rail link; the Tejas Rajdhani from Delhi (~11–12 hrs) is the premium overnight option, and scores of daily trains cover Mumbai, Delhi, Vadodara and Rajkot. Sabarmati Junction (SBIB) and Maninagar handle many fast trains — check your platform city.
