Geography & terrain

Agartala spreads along the flat alluvial floor of the Haora river valley in western Tripura, only ~2 km from the Bangladesh border — the state shares 84% of its boundary with Bangladesh. The city is threaded with lakes (Jagannath Dighi, the palace tanks) and gardens, with Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport 12 km to the south; 25–30 km away the Sepahijala hills begin, and Rudrasagar Lake with Neermahal lies 53 km to the south-east at Melaghar.

History & culture

Capital of the Manikya dynasty, whose Tripuri kingdom stood for centuries between the hills and Bengal, Agartala flowered as a model princely state in the 19th–20th centuries. Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya rebuilt Ujjayanta Palace in 1899–1901 after the 1897 earthquake destroyed his earlier palace — an Indo-Saracenic blend of Mughal, Roman and British styles crowned by an 86-ft dome. It hosted the Tripura Legislative Assembly until 2011–12, then became the Tripura State Museum; his grandson Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya added the Rudrasagar water palace (1921–30), built by the British firm Martin & Burn. Gandhi visited in 1925, Tagore was a frequent royal guest, and the merger with India came in 1949.
