Historical significance
Shivpuri's river is the same Ganga that has made Rishikesh a holy town for centuries: the ghats, the Laxman Jhula legend — the crossing where Lakshmana is said to have swung across the river on a jute rope — and the ashrams that line the banks have drawn pilgrims and seekers for centuries. In 1968 the town added a modern chapter when the Beatles visited the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram on the east bank; the abandoned ashram's graffiti-covered ruins have since become an accidental monument to the counterculture era. The rafting tradition that now defines Shivpuri began in the 1980s as Indian mountaineers adapted river-running techniques to the Ganga's mountain stretch, and the surrounding hills are part of Rajaji National Park, named after C. Rajagopalachari, whose forests give the gorge its wild setting.
Geographical significance
Shivpuri sits in the last gorge the Ganga cuts before leaving the mountains: the river, having descended from the Himalaya through Devprayag, narrows and accelerates through the Shivalik foothills here, and the resulting rapids — rollers, holes and wave trains of Grade II–III — are the product of the river's force funnelled between boulders and cliffs. The stretch is wrapped in the sal forests of Rajaji National Park, whose elephants, leopards and birdlife patrol the banks above the water, and the river's flow is governed by the releases of the Tehri dam upstream, which make the water level predictable across seasons. Just below Shivpuri, the Ganga leaves the hills near Rishikesh and spreads into the flat plains of northern India — the last mountain water before the great river becomes the river of the plains.
