Historical significance
Konark's Sun Temple was built around 1250 by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty — a chariot of the sun god with 24 carved wheels, pulled by seven horses, whose walls carry the great erotic and mythological panels of medieval Orissan art; the temple, long called the 'Black Pagoda' by sailors, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Puri's Jagannath temple, founded in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga, became the heart of a cult that spread devotion across India, and its Rath Yatra — the annual chariot procession from which the English word 'juggernaut' derives — remains the largest religious procession in the world. Together the two sites anchor Odisha's history: the dynastic patronage that built the temples, the bhakti movement they fuelled, and the later centuries when both became symbols of regional identity under Mughal, Maratha and British rule.
Geographical significance
Puri and Konark sit on the Odisha coast of the Bay of Bengal, on the wide alluvial plain built by the Mahanadi river's delta, whose sands have created some of the longest beaches in eastern India. Puri's beach runs a clean 5 km of golden sand backed by casuarina groves, while Konark lies further up the coast on a stretch where the temple was aligned with the rising sun — its main entrance faces east over the sea horizon. The coast here is part of a migratory bird corridor, and the nearby Chilika lagoon, Asia's largest brackish water lake, lies just south of Puri, its islands and mudflats a wintering ground for tens of thousands of birds. The region's tropical climate, monsoon-fed rivers and warm seas define both its agriculture and its beaches.
