Historical significance
Ooty (Udhagamandalam) was established in the 1820s by British officials, notably John Sullivan, who saw in the Nilgiri grasslands a temperate enclave and built the first bungalow at the head of the hills. It grew into the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency, complete with a club, church, racecourse and governor's residence — the stately Raj Bhavan — that are still in use. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, opened in 1908 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, conquered the 1,800 m escarpment from Mettupalayam to Ooty with rack-and-pinion sections, and remains the most scenic way to arrive. Tea, planted in the 19th century after coffee failed, reshaped the surrounding slopes and defines the region's economy to this day; the Botanical Gardens, founded in 1848, are among India's oldest.
Geographical significance
The Nilgiris are a block of ancient gneiss uplifted into a 2,600 m plateau that rises abruptly from the plains — a rare example of a montane 'island' ecosystem, isolated for millions of years, with endemic plant species and the shola-grassland mosaic unique to the Western Ghats. At 2,240 m, Ooty sits on a high, undulating plateau bounded by the Doddabetta summit (2,637 m), the highest point in the Nilgiris, and receives rain from both monsoons, keeping the tea estates and forests perpetually green. The plateau is the watershed for rivers flowing to three states — Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka — which is why the British called the hills 'the sanatorium of the south' and why they now supply much of southern India's drinking water.
