Historical significance
Mysore has been the seat of the Wodeyar dynasty since the 14th century, when the family rose from local chieftains under Vijayanagara suzerainty to rule one of South India's most durable kingdoms. Between them, the two most famous interludes belong to Haidar Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, who built a formidable military state in the 18th century before the British restored the Wodeyars in 1799. The city's monuments compress this arc: Srirangapatna across the river preserves Tipu's summer palace and fort, while Mysore Palace itself — rebuilt in Indo-Saracenic style in 1912 after a fire — remains a working royal residence, lit by 97,000 bulbs on Sundays. Chamundi Hill, crowned by the Chamundeshwari temple and a colossal Nandi, is the dynasty's tutelary deity's home, and the Dasara festival, celebrated for over 400 years, still culminates here with the royal procession.
