Historical significance
Murudeshwar's mythology reaches back to the Ramayana: the town's name is tied to the legend of Ravana's atma-linga — the same story celebrated at Gokarna — and the temple on Kanduka hill has been a coastal pilgrimage site for centuries, mentioned in the region's puranic literature and patronised by the Vijayanagara empire and restored under the Keladi Nayakas. In 2002, the town gained a modern monument of equal weight: a 37-metre statue of Shiva, among the tallest in the world, built on the hillock by philanthropist R.N. Shetty, which has turned the once-sleepy fishing town into one of Karnataka's most photographed landmarks. The offshore Netrani island, called Pigeon Island by the British, served as a naval gunnery target until the 1990s before being protected as a dive site — a history visible in its scattered wrecks.
Geographical significance
Murudeshwar sits on the Arabian Sea coast of Uttara Kannada, on a narrow laterite headland where the Western Ghats come within 40 km of the shore, and the town is built around Kanduka hill, a rocky headland rising directly from the sea with the temple and statue perched on its summit. The coast here alternates rocky headlands, coconut groves and wide sandy beaches, backed by low laterite hills and the estuaries of short coastal rivers. Roughly 18 kilometres offshore lies Netrani, a small coral-fringed island on the continental shelf whose reefs and clear water make it the principal dive site of Karnataka's coast, while the warm, monsoon-fed waters and mangrove-lined estuaries support a rich coastal ecology and one of the state's most productive fisheries.
