Historical significance
Udupi's history centres on the Sri Krishna Matha, established in the 13th century by the philosopher-saint Madhvacharya, who installed the temple's famous Krishna idol and founded the Dvaita school of Vedanta — the matha's eight monasteries have run the temple continuously for eight centuries, and the Car Street procession remains one of the oldest continuous temple rituals in South India. Mangalore, by contrast, has been a trading port since antiquity, mentioned by Ptolemy, and was contested for centuries by the Portuguese, the Nayakas, Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan, and later the British, who developed it as a major port; its many names and mixed cultures — Tulu, Konkani, Beary — reflect that contested maritime past. The 19th-century Basel Mission and the city's modern port and banking industries complete a history that runs from ancient trade to modern commerce.
Geographical significance
Mangalore lies at the mouth of the Netravati and Gurupura rivers on the Karnataka coast, at the point where the Western Ghats come within 40 km of the sea, compressing the coastal strip into a green band of coconut groves and backwaters. Udupi sits further north at the mouth of the small Pavanje river, and the 60 km between them is a coastline of broad beaches, estuaries and the offshore St. Mary's Islands, a rare volcanic feature of columnar basalt formed by lava cooling in hexagonal prisms. The region's heavy monsoon (over 3,000 mm a year) and warm sea create a lush, tropical coastal geography, with the estuaries' mangroves and mudflats providing rich habitat for migratory birds and the region's famous coastal fisheries.
