Historical significance
Varkala is one of Kerala's oldest sacred coasts: its Janardhana Swamy temple is counted among the 108 Vishnu temples of the region and is said to be over two thousand years old, and the mineral springs at the cliff's base — the Surya Theertha — have drawn pilgrims for centuries, their waters believed to be curative. In the 20th century the town became a pilgrimage of a different kind: it is home to Sivagiri, the ashram of the reformer and philosopher Sree Narayana Guru, whose samadhi is honoured each year by followers from across the state. Kovalam, meanwhile, was a working fishing village until the 1930s, and its transformation into a beach destination — first for the Travancore royalty, later for the global travellers of the 1970s — turned a quiet cove into Kerala's most famous beach, while its fishing harbour keeps the older economy alive beside the tourism.
Geographical significance
Varkala holds a rare piece of Kerala's geology: the only cliffs on the state's coast, where the Warkalli formation — layers of tertiary sandstone, clay and lignite — rises up to 40 m directly above the Arabian Sea, creating the cliff-top promenade that defines the town. The cliffs' mineral-rich layers feed the springs at their base, while the beach below, Papanasam, is where pilgrims perform rituals believed to wash away sins. Thirty kilometres to the south, Kovalam lies on a headland with three crescent coves — Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra — cut into the laterite coast, palm-fringed and sheltered. Both beaches face the open Arabian Sea, with warm, clear water and the seasonal monsoon rhythms that shape Kerala's coast.

What should I know before visiting Kovalam & Varkala?
Varkala's cliff gets busy at sunset — take the northern end for quiet The mineral springs below Papanasam are a ritual stop
Varkala's cliff walk is a slow promenade with the sea performing below — fishermen casting lines, surfers waiting, the waves turning from blue to gold as the afternoon burns down. The cliff cafés are tiny wooden decks with cushions and guitars, and the sunset there is a daily festival of people falling quiet. Kovalam is the softer, older cousin: the lighthouse watching over the crescent, the harbour's fish landing in the morning, the beach boys renting boards and umbrellas with ancient patience. An ayurvedic massage in the afternoon leaves you slow and heavy, and dinner is always fish, always fresh, always with the sea loud in the dark. It is the most effortlessly relaxing coast in India — the kind of weekend where the hardest decision is which beach tomorrow.
