Historical significance
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire, which ruled much of southern India from 1336 until its catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Talikota in 1565, after which the city was sacked and abandoned. At its height, Hampi was among the largest cities in the medieval world, with a population that may have exceeded half a million and a bazaar street described by Portuguese travellers as one of the richest markets in Asia. The surviving monuments compress the empire's glory: the Virupaksha temple, still an active shrine older than the city itself; the Vittala temple with its stone chariot and musical pillars; the Krishna and Hazara Rama temples; the royal enclosure's audience halls; and the elephant stables. The city's core is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the ruins extend over 25 km² of boulders and riverbank.
Geographical significance
Hampi occupies a stretch of the Tungabhadra river gorge where the river bends around granite boulder fields — some of the oldest exposed rock in India, weathered over millennia into the city's dramatic, surreal landscape. The boulders are residual tors of Archaean granitic gneiss; their size and stability provided natural fortification and construction material, and the river's water, combined with the reservoir-fed agriculture of the empire's irrigation engineers, sustained one of the medieval world's great cities in a semi-arid rain shadow. The river, the boulders and the floodplain remain the stage for everything you will see: temples on the bank, a stone bridge across the river, and the coracle ferries plying the water as they have for centuries.
