Mullayanagiri's 1,930 m peak, Baba Budangiri's pilgrim ridge and coffee as far as the eye can see. Chikmagalur is Coorg's more active cousin — sunrise treks, waterfall drives and estate verandas.

Historical significance
Chikmagalur's history is entwined with two legends. The name means 'the younger daughter's town', from the dowry of a local chieftain's daughters. And it is the birthplace of Indian coffee: according to tradition, the Sufi saint Baba Budan smuggled seven coffee beans from Yemen to the Western Ghats in the 17th century and planted them on the ranges that now bear his name. The Dattatreya Peetha on the Baba Budangiri hills and the nearby Sufi dargah share a rare joint Hindu-Muslim pilgrimage tradition. The town also sits in the shadow of the Hoysala-era temple circuit — Belur is just 25 km away — and the surrounding hills carry the ruins of minor forts and the 19th-century plantation economy that turned the district into the coffee capital of India.
Geographical significance
Chikmagalur is cradled by the Western Ghats: Mullayanagiri, at 1,930 m, is Karnataka's highest summit, and the Baba Budangiri range runs as its neighbour. The ghats here form the watershed between the Arabian Sea-bound rivers and the Cauvery basin, and the district's high rainfall (2,000–3,500 mm) sustains evergreen and shola forests, coffee and pepper plantations and a rich population of gaur, leopard and many endemic birds. The east-facing slopes are cooler and drier, which is exactly the microclimate that made the region suited to arabica — the beans' elevation, shade and slow ripening translate directly into the cup — and a geography lesson you can taste in every estate brew.

The drive to Mullayanagiri's summit is a slow climb through cloud, and at the top the entire Malnad is a rumpled green blanket below you — no horizon, just layers of hills fading into haze. Down in the estates, the mornings begin with the smell of roasting coffee drifting from estate kitchens, and the fog sits on the pepper vines like a sheet. Trekking trails cut through jungles loud with birdsong, and the Hebbe and Kalhatti falls roar in the background of every walk. Chikmagalur is the rare place where the cup of coffee you drink at a roadside stall is a direct, unbroken line back to the seven beans that started it all — and the hills make sure you remember it.
