Historical significance
The Biligiriranga Swamy Temple, which gives the range its name, has stood on the summit for centuries, drawing pilgrims from the plains tribes and the villages of the region; the hill's mythology ties it to the sage Valmiki and the Ramayana's hunting traditions. The area was long the domain of the Soliga people, an indigenous community whose knowledge of the forests was only formally recognised with the establishment of the Biligiriranga Swamy Temple Wildlife Sanctuary in 1974, upgraded to a tiger reserve in 2011 as one of the first of its kind in India. The temple's continued operation inside the reserve makes BR Hills a rare example of a working sacred site at the heart of a conservation landscape, where the forest, the community and the shrine have co-existed for centuries.
Geographical significance
The BR Hills are a 1,200 m block of Archaean gneiss rising abruptly from the dry plains between the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats — an 'island' of high-altitude shola forest and grassland that connects the two ghat ranges in one of India's most important wildlife corridors. The reserve's 540 km² span a remarkable rainfall gradient, from dry deciduous forest at the base to moist shola at the summit, supporting elephants, tigers, leopards and gaur in densities rare for a small reserve. The hills' height and isolation create the cold, misty nights that make winter mornings foggy and crisp, and the summit's position above the plains gives the temple its commanding view over the Cauvery basin to the west.
