Historical significance
Bir's modern history began in the 1960s, when Tibetan refugees settled here at the invitation of the Indian government, founding a colony that has grown into one of the major centres of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism — the Chokling monastery houses manuscripts and a community of monks that give the village its distinctive character. The Kangra valley around Bir carries a far older history: the region was a stronghold of the Katoch dynasty, whose Kangra fort is among the oldest in India, and the 16th-century Baijnath temple nearby preserves the Shiva cult's presence in the valley. The village's most recent chapter started in the 1980s when pilots discovered the Billing launch site, and the valley has since hosted international paragliding competitions, turning a farming and monastic village into the sport's Indian capital.
Geographical significance
Bir sits at about 1,500 m on the southern foot of the Dhauladhar range, with the launch point at Billing on the ridge at 2,400 m — a vertical gain of nearly a kilometre in a few minutes of flight. The Dhauladhar's southern face rises from the valley floor to over 4,500 m in one of the world's steepest elevation gains, catching the monsoon and feeding the tea gardens, pine and deodar forests of the lower slopes. The valley below is a broad, green corridor of tea estates, streams and terraced fields, and the thermals rising off the valley floor in the midday sun are what make Bir one of the most reliable flying sites in the world — a geography that turned a quiet village into an aviation destination.
