Historical significance
Belur and Halebidu were the heart of the Hoysala Empire, which ruled much of southern Karnataka between the 11th and 14th centuries. Halebidu — then Dwarasamudra, 'gateway to the ocean' of its own reservoir — was the imperial capital, and Belur's Chennakeshava temple was commissioned in 1117 by King Vishnuvardhana to commemorate his victory over the Cholas. The Hoysaleshwara temple at Halebidu, begun in 1121, was still unfinished when the capital fell to the Delhi Sultanate in the 1340s, an event that ended the dynasty but scattered its artists across the Vijayanagara empire. In 2023 the Hoysala temples were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognising the dynasty's signature star-shaped platform and the extraordinary soapstone carving that covers every surface — a stone-working tradition the region has never again matched.
Geographical significance
The two towns sit in the fertile Malnad belt of the Cauvery basin, on the western edge of the Deccan plateau where the land begins to rise toward the Western Ghats. The region's abundant water — Dwarasamudra's name commemorates a vast artificial reservoir fed by the Yagachi river — supported the dense population that sustained the Hoysala court and its armies of artisans. The fine-grained green chloritic schist (soapstone) used for the temples was quarried in the nearby hills and is soft enough to carve in detail when fresh yet hardens with exposure — the geological accident that made the Hoysalas' intricate sculpture possible.
